Unlike previous years where we have worked out the schedule as much in advance as possible for the year ahead, this year we’re winging it, playing it by ear, flying by the seat of our pants, and other similar expressions.

We are working approximately a month to two months ahead, suggestions can be made throughout the year and we are looking for volunteer hosts only as far as a few weeks ahead. We are currently working on the groups for February as per the above post, and looking for suggestions for March and that’s it. Amazing huh?

So far so good and people seem to like this though for my well ordered and categorised, everything planned in advance brain, I am freaking out a little, even though it was my idea. Perhaps I have a split personality, something to mull over. Meanwhile it does feel more interactive and people are getting more involved. I think it gives the whole group a feeling of immediacy as people are suggesting and voting for books that they want to read next week rather than in six months time.

Fingers crossed for the rest of the year!

So I have been rather remiss at updating. Well I have no excuse except the same excuses that everyone has at the end of the year – CHRISTMAS! Too much to do in too little time.

And also no time to do the things I *planned* to do. Yes I did have a whole bunch of things planned to do over Christmas and New Year and somehow – pouf – and all the time has run out. I have also been very busy craftwise as well, but again I need more hours in the day to fit it all in.

I had even been collecting books I was planning to read over Christmas, can you believe that? And then, what happens? I don’t get to read ANY of them. Yup that’s right, they are all still sitting on the shelf waiting for me to remember them.

But enough about my problems with time management. Here are the books we will be reading next month (Feb) with the book group. Groups will be staggered so you won’t be required to read three books at the same time if you wanted to join in all three discussions.

Book Group News

We are now in the last two months of the year and coming to the end of our Book Group schedule. For those who have participated with us so far, thank you and I hope you have had fun. For anyone who hasnt participated or dropped out, we hope you see you soon.

We have some great books being discussed and it’s not too late to join in. If you are interested in reading and discussing these books with us, then make sure you are in the Book Group and come on down! It’s fun really, and not at all like school – we don’t even have a pop quiz!

November:
Agents of Light & Darkness – Simon R Green: Join me and Forgotten on another trip into the Nightside. This is one of my favourite Nightside books. We got good, evil, angels, unholy grails, and Shotgun Suzie!

The Choice of the Cat – EE Knight: Join me (again) and Nabs for book two in the Vampire Earth series. Yes I am alledgedly hosting two books this month, which is why I need help lol. But if I can host two, then it’s even easier for you to sign up just to read one or two, right? Not to mention we have the terrific EE Knight himself popping in between Con duties, just to answer your questions!

Sense and Sensibility – Jane Austen: Hosted by Becs, we have another of Jane Austen’s famous and best selling novels. All of her books have been made into films, she has written six of the top selling books of all time, and one of her books was even made into a Bollywood musical. The books are quite simply terrific and well worth the read. Unfortunately short of digging up the author and a spot of necromancy, Jane Austen will not be attending.

So what are you waiting for? Remember all members, authors included, are free to join us in any book discussions that take your fancy. Discussions are fun, informal and you get to read books at chat about them – what more could you want?

Book Group 2008

Book Buddy and My 52 Books will continue in 2008, but we also have some other great reading challenges for you. Just click on the Reading Challenges 2008 Board for more details.

Suggestions for next year’s Book Group.

The suggestion threads are waiting for your suggestions! They will remain open until Halloween, after which time we will be putting up polls for voting. So if you want a chance at getting your favourite books discussed with the Book Group in 2008, go to this board and make your suggestions before 31st October!

Here are the books we will be discussing in October with the Book Group:

The Stand – Stephen King
Synopsis When a man crashes his car into a petrol station, he brings with him the foul corpses of his wife and daughter. He dies and it doesn’t take long for the plague which killed him to spread across America and the world… Hosted by Coffeesaint

Thief of Lives (Noble Dead #2) – Barb & JC Hendee
After she had taken care of the vampire problem in Miiska, her and Leesil’s adopted village, Magiere assumed her vampire-hunting days were over. Now a successful tavern owner, she wants nothing more than to forget about vampires. But when a vampire kills a councilman’s daughter in the city of Bela, Miiska officials pressure her to go hunt down and kill the vampire. At Leesil’s urging, she reluctantly agrees. The trip gets off to a bad start when three hired thugs try to kill Magiere aboard the ship to Bela, and when she and Leesil begin investigating, Magiere is puzzled by the deliberate nature of the crime. Clearly, someone was trying to send a message. But was the sender a vampire or some other sinister, dark force? Hosted by Cat

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance – Robert Pirsig
One of the most important and influential books written in the past half-century, Robert M. Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is a powerful, moving, and penetrating examination of how we live . . . and a breathtaking meditation on how to live better. Here is the book that transformed a generation: an unforgettable narration of a summer motorcycle trip across America’s Northwest, undertaken by a father and his young son. A story of love and fear — of growth, discovery, and acceptance — that becomes a profound personal and philosophical odyssey into life’s fundamental questions, this uniquely exhilarating modern classic is both touching and transcendent, resonant with the myriad confusions of existence . . . and the small, essential triumphs that propel us forward. Hosted by Jvstice

Are you excited yet? huh? Are you? We have three great and very different books to choose from this month. I have signed up for two out of the three – that’s gonna be hard enough as I will be back in study mode, but I’m gonna try! So if you want to join in, just follow the links to the Book Group.

This month’s newsletter will be short and sweet but very important!
October Book Groups:

We have three groups for you next month

The Stand – Stephen King (Hosted by Coffeesaint)
Thief of Lives (Noble Dead #2) – Barb & JC Hendee (Hosted by Cat)
The authors will be joining us again

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance – Robert Pirsig (Hosted by Jvstice)

I’m really looking forward to reading some great books next month! Hope you can join us.

IMPORTANT

What books will we be reading next year with the Book Group? Well that really depends on you!

There are only 100 days left of this year, so we need to get planning so that everyone can be prepared for the New Year kick-off. Yes I know, 100 days sounds like a lot and do we really need to think about this now? Well, yes we do, because we have halloween, and thanksgiving and christmas and new year and vacations all between now and then. Plus we need to get the suggestions in so we can vote, so we can plan the schedule and find people to host the discussions. Authors have to be contacted, people need time to get a hold of books… well you get the idea I’m sure.

So with that in mind, the 2008 suggestion threads went up a few days ago. You can find them all by clicking here. You will have to be a member to see this part of the board.

We are looking for suggestions in the following categories:

Romance, Paranormal Romance, Chicklit

Sci-Fi, Fantasy, & Horror

Classic & Historical Fiction

Contemporary & Modern Fiction

Non-Fiction & Biography

Crime, Mystery & Thriller

Within those categories you can include children’s books, graphic novels, prize-winnng books, books-to-movie and so on.

When suggesting a book, please include author’s name and any information that might be helpful to other people, when it comes to voting for the books you want to read. If the book is part of a series, please give details of the series.

Remember, you should be suggesting books that YOU want to read with the Book Group next year. They will then be put to a vote and the books with the most votes will be shortlisted. There are some series that we will be continuing to read next year automatically so you don’t have to waste your votes on them.

Note: We got some cool new features coming up in the new year, which will affect the Book Group in particular. Things will be much easier, discussions will be easier to find, there will be no signup threads, and there will be a funky new way of accessing the book group!
